Design an optimal checkout flow
Important: This integration method is deprecated as of January 1, 2017. PayPal continues to support existing merchants using this method, but please be advised new features and enhancements will not be applied to these integrations. For new integrations, see the PayPal Checkout Integration Guide.
Through testing, research, and qualitative studies, PayPal has identified specific elements that optimize the checkout experience and achieve the best results when using PayPal Express Checkout with In-Context Checkout.
These design guidelines can help you convert a higher number of sales, increase customer loyalty, and provide buyers a fast, easy, and intuitive checkout process.
Add PayPal as a payment option
Show the payment options you offer on your Home and Product Details pages. Buyers think about how they will pay for their purchases before they see the final payment page. Place payment messaging early and often to help buyers quickly make a payment choice and to increase the likelihood of a purchase.
Add a PayPal Checkout button to your shopping cart page and enable In-Context Checkout. For detailed instructions, see Express Checkout with In-Context integration guide.
The PayPal payment button should always be:
- Appear at the right, left, top or bottom of the page.
- Align vertically or horizontally, either below or next to your own cart's checkout buttons.
- Appear before your website collects any billing or shipping details, and before any other payment.
Display PayPal as a payment option on your Payment Methods page.
Add a PayPal logo or mark to your existing payment choices to help buyers clearly understand their payment options:
Create a seamless transition
Create a seamless transition from your website to the PayPal login and review page to give buyers reassurance and confidence in their purchases:
Pass your store logo and business name to the PayPal login and review that overlays your website. This reassures buyers they are still in your checkout flow.
To set up this feature:
- Log into your PayPal business account.
- Click Profile, and then Profile and settings.
- Under My Profile, click My selling tools.
- Under Selling online, go to Custom payment pages, and click Update.
- On the Customize your Payment page, click Add.
- Enter the URL to your logo located on a secure server.
Note: If your logo is not stored on a secure server, the buyer's web browser will display a message that the payment page contains nonsecure items.
- Pass line item details to PayPal, including the breakdown of items and total purchase costs. This gives buyers confidence in their transactions because they can see their purchase details from start to end.
If your website collects customer information, pass the information to PayPal to pre-fill billing information. This saves buyers time and eliminates the need to re-enter their information.
The numbers in this diagram correspond to the previous steps:

Customize the checkout flow
- Customize the PayPal Payment Pages to match the style of your website. For detailed instructions, see Customizing Express Checkout.
- Set the credit card statement name. To avoid any confusion and potential chargebacks, ensure your business or website name correctly appears on your buyers' credit card statements. To set the credit card statement name, log into your PayPal business account and navigate to the Payment Receiving Preferences page. For detailed instructions, see Set up and maintain your account.
