In-Context Checkout in Express Checkout FAQs

This topic provides answers to common technical questions from developers:


Which PayPal merchants are eligible to integrate the redesigned checkout?

Currently, merchants with Express Checkout Sale, Authorization and Order transactions are supported. As more features are added over the course of this year, additional merchants will be eligible. See the Implementation Requirements for details.

Does a merchant have the ability to opt-in or opt-out of the in-context checkout experience?

Once a merchant or partner integrates the in-context checkout experience, that merchant's eligible customers will automatically get the new checkout experience.

What happens to consumers who are not eligible for the in-context checkout experience?

They will be automatically redirected to the full-page PayPal checkout experience. The merchant does not have to make any changes. As consumers become eligible, they will experience the new in-context checkout experience.

Can a merchant make in-context checkout an opt-in or opt-out experience for customers?

Yes. Merchants can build their own opt-in or opt-out functionality for their customers. PayPal will support the in-context checkout integration for all merchants, but will not provide opt-in or opt-out functionality for the integration.

Integration and features

How many development days will it take for existing merchants to integrate the in-context checkout experience?

The total time it takes depends on the number of pages you need to integrate. Integration can take a few days to a few weeks.

Are reference transactions, recurring payments, adaptive payments, and digital goods available?

Reference transactions are currently available for US and UK merchants and will be available for other markets in a future release.

Recurring payments, adaptive payments and digital goods will also be available in a future release.

If I adopt the in-context checkout experience option, will I have to integrate again as new features become available?

No. Once integrated, you'll automatically get access to all of the new features.

Consumer experience

Can buyers use a PayPal debit card as a funding source?

While buyers can use their PayPal debit card to initiate transactions, they will be redirected to the full-page PayPal checkout experience.

Will pop-up blockers prevent the in-context checkout window from rendering?

No, they will not prevent the in-context checkout window from displaying. For pages with multiple submission buttons, as long as the JavaScript is loaded using onclick or submit, rather than onload, pop-up blockers will not prevent the in-context checkout window from being displayed.

Can the consumer resize, dismiss and expand the in-context checkout window?

Yes, consumers can resize, dismiss and expand the in-context checkout window. Dismissing (clicking the x on) the window takes the consumer back to the merchant site to continue shopping. Expanding the in-context checkout window will show the full-page checkout experience.

Will the in-context checkout window lose focus behind another window?

No, the in-context checkout window will remain on top if a consumer clicks the parent window. For cases in which the in-context checkout window does lose focus (for example by minimizing the window), there will be a link on the greyed out merchant page to bring the in-context checkout window back to focus. This label includes a message similar to the following: Don't see the secure PayPal browser? We'll help you re-launch the window to complete your purchase. Continue.

Does the in-context checkout window appear on Mobile devices or Tablets?

No. On mobile devices, the small screen size favors a full-page experience. On tablet devices, a new window always opens in a new tab, hence we prefer to provide the full-page checkout experience.
