Deprecation of Website Payments Standard (WPS)
What is happening to Website Payments Standard (WPS)?
PayPal is deprecating Website Payments Standard (WPS) starting January, 2026. This change affects the "Buy Now" and "Add to Cart" buttons. The Donations and Subscribe buttons will remain unaffected.
What does "deprecation" mean for WPS?
During the deprecation period:
- WPS will continue to function but will only receive critical security updates.
- No new features or enhancements will be added.
- New integrations should not use WPS.
- PayPal may retire WPS anytime after January 1, 2027.
Can I continue using WPS on my platform?
Yes, but we strongly recommend upgrading to PayPal Checkout via Multiparty Payment Solution and planning user migration early to avoid disruption.
Can I onboard new merchants using WPS?
It's strongly discouraged. Onboard merchants using PayPal Checkout via Multiparty Payment Solution for a modern, scalable experience.
What is the recommended replacement for WPS?
Use PayPal Checkout via Multiparty Payment Solution, which offers:
- API-first integration.
- Access to various payment methods (cards, PayPal, Venmo, Buy Now Pay Later, local methods). Product offering vary by market/country.
- Customizable checkout.
- Enhanced reporting and conversion tools.
What type of support will be available during the deprecation period?
- Only critical security issues will be addressed.
- No new features or non-critical fixes will be available.
- No onboarding or integration support will be provided.
- Migration support will be available upon request.
- Updated documentation will be provided.
How and when will merchants be informed?
PayPal will communicate directly with affected merchants at key milestones. Once the partner has upgraded, they should also inform their merchants to switch to the new product on the partner’s platform. A communication template will be provided to support this outreach.
What does PayPal ask of partners?
- Reinforce messaging in your platform.
- Consider back-office messaging.
- Use provided assets to guide merchants.
What assets will PayPal provide to partners?
Legal-approved merchant email templates.
What should my platform do now?
- Review current WPS user base.
- Upgrade platform to PayPal Checkout via Multiparty Payment Solution.
- Embed migration messaging in user flows.
- Use provided templates to coordinate outreach timelines.
