Website Payments Pro

Last updated: Sept 19th, 12:33am

Website Payments Pro is an API-based solution that lets merchants and developers accept credit and debit cards directly on their website. Buyers paying with PayPal or PayPal Credit® (formerly Bill Me Later® ) check out securely on PayPal.com. Website Payments Pro includes Direct Payment, Express Checkout, and additional PayPal solutions and tools — like Virtual Terminal, Fraud Management Filters, and reference transactions.

Why use Website Payments Pro

Website Payments Pro includes the Direct Payment APIs. These enable merchants to:

Personalize customers' experience

  • Design and host their checkout pages themselves.
  • Keep customers on their website for credit card transactions. (Customers who choose to pay with the PayPal payment method would still be redirected to PayPal.com.)
  • Authorize transactions in real-time.

Get started accepting credit and debit cards

  • Use pre-integrated with many popular shopping carts.
  • Integrate the PayPal API into their website using PayPal's SDK toolkit or directly integrate with APIs using SOAP or Name Value pair format.

Offer PayPal customers a streamlined checkout experience

  • Customize the look and feel of payment pages on the PayPal site to match their website.
  • Eliminate the need for customers to enter personal details including shipping, billing, or payment information.
  • Process customers' payments on PayPal's secure site.
  • Automatically return customers to the merchant's website to complete the order.

Accept phone, mail, fax payments

  • Includes Virtual Terminal, a web-based application that turns any computer into a credit card terminal. Merchants can log in to their PayPal account and enter offline credit card orders. (PayPal Virtual Terminal is not available in U.S. territories.)

Get paid quickly

  • After a payment is processed, receive payments in your PayPal account in minutes unlike other providers who can take from two to three days to deposit funds into your account.

Stay informed with reporting

  • Choose from various reports, including transaction status and settlement.
  • Customize reporting with APIs that integrate into merchants' back-office applications.
  • Use post-authorization APIs to send transaction data to your back-end solution.

Securely manage transactions

  • Use the Direct Payment API to flag potentially fraudulent transactions. Address Verification Service (AVS) and Card Security Code (CVV2) is built in.
Set up recurring payments
  • Securely add recurring payments, storing and encrypting customers' information.
  • With your customers' permission, bill their card for recurring payments without asking for their payment information again.
  • Add the Recurring Billing Service which automatically debits customers' debit or credit cards. Available for an additional fee.

How to get started

To implement Website Payments Pro:

  1. Verify your account status. Go to your PayPal Profile under My settings and verify that your Account Type is Business, or upgrade your account.
  2. Complete the Website Payments Pro application.  PayPal reviews your application (typically within 2 business days).  You can begin integration with PayPal sandbox environment while you are being approved, but remember that you must be approved to go live.
  3. Choose an integration method:
    • Many leading e-commerce solutions are pre-integrated with Website Payments Pro. For more information, see PayPal Partner Solutions.
    • Use the Website Payments Pro APIs to implement Direct Payment and add Express Checkout. Create a custom application using the Website Payments Pro APIs. Your application must implement both an Express Checkout flow and a Direct Payment flow. For information on APIs, see API Reference or the integration guide listed under Documentation.

After you verify that your implementation works correctly in the sandbox, you can go live. For details, see PayPal Sandbox.

International availability and fees

  • Website Payments Pro is also available in Canada and the United Kingdom. There are minor regional differences, including transaction limits, the kinds of credit cards accepted, and address information.

  • There are fees for currency conversion and to receive payments from another country. For details, see Transaction Fees for Cross-border Payments.

  • Credit is a regulated activity in the UK. Before integrating a PayPal Credit button, you must be authorized to act as a credit broker and have a credit agreement with PayPal. For more information, contact business customer support through paypal.com or by calling 0800 358 7929.
