Let us know what you think of the updated documentation by selecting the feedback tab below.Your sellers complete onboarding to accept PayPal payments on your platform. The onboarding process has API-assisted sign up with fields filled with data previously collected from the seller so the seller can onboard quickly.
PayPal vets your sellers and conducts risk and compliance checks on your sellers locally and globally.
For the multiparty payment solution, there are 2 types of sellers applicable to the integration:
Casual sellers are sellers who sell part-time and don't have an official, registered business. They can have a personal or business type of PayPal account. They may sell through a personal type of PayPal account to hide their information such as address and telephone number. For example, casual sellers may use PayPal to receive money at a yard sale.
Business sellers are sellers who sell full-time and do have an official, registered business. For example, business sellers will use their PayPal account to receive money for their online clothing store.
After you identify which type of sellers you want on your platform, choose how you want to onboard your sellers.
There are 3 ways to onboard:
- Onboarding sellers before payment
- Onboarding sellers after payment
- Build onboarding into software
How it works
Your sellers will receive a link from you to activate account set up. They need to log in to an existing account PayPal if they already have one.
Onboarding flow with existing account:
- Your seller clicks the account setup link you give them.
- The link directs them to log in.
- The seller is prompted to grant you permission
- The set up is completed. The seller is directed back to your site.
Onboarding flow with existing account
If your sellers don't have a PayPal account, they will have to sign up for one after they click the account setup link you give them.
Onboarding flow without an existing account:
- The link directs them to create an account.
- The seller fills in the mandatory fields and grants you permission.
- Build your business profile.
- The set up is completed. The seller is directed back to your site.
Seller onboards by creating a new account
Onboarding sellers before payment
Onboarding sellers before payment is the recommended and most common way of onboarding. It supports both standard and advanced checkout. You can connect your sellers with PayPal before they accept PayPal payments from buyers on your platform.
To onboard, your seller clicks a sign-up link on your website. The link redirects them to log in or to sign up for a PayPal account. The seller can then grant you permission to process payments on their behalf. You localize the form fields by using the Partner Referrals API to fill the onboarding form with previously collected data about your sellers.
Onboarding sellers after payment
Connect your sellers to PayPal after they accept PayPal payments from buyers on your platform. Before your sellers onboard, this only supports standard checkout. Sellers can accept funds immediately before creating a PayPal account and connecting it to your platform. After a seller receives payment, they are notified by email to sign up or log in to their PayPal account.
Build onboarding into software
Build onboarding into your software is for plugins and extensions. It is a downloadable solution hosted on your server to include onboarding sellers with PayPal. This supports both standard and advanced checkout. Sellers can create or upgrade their existing personal PayPal account to a business account before accepting funds.
Country Eligibility
Scroll through the table to find your country and eligibility. Column headings note the eligibility for combinations of PayPal account type, checkout solution, and onboarding seller. For example, the first column header 'Business, before, standard' means sellers with business accounts and onboarding before payment can use standard checkout.
Important: For partners or third-party providers onboarding an integration that receives payments, only onboard sellers not in the send-only countries. Sellers in send-only countries cannot receive payments. This limitation is only for payment integrations.
