Reserves in your reportsAnchorIcon

When rolling or capped reserves are active on your merchant account, reserve activity is reflected in your Daily Funding Report (DFR) and monthly statements.

Daily Funding Report (DFR)AnchorIcon

The DFR is the primary report for tracking your daily reserve activity. Reserve holds and releases show up in the summary and detail sections.

Report summaryAnchorIcon

The report summary includes the daily aggregate of reserve held and reserve released amounts in the Adjustments field. This ensures the disbursement total ties out with the actual bank transfer.
Summary fieldIncludes
Gross SalesTotal settled transaction volume for the day
RefundsTotal refunds processed
ChargebacksTotal chargebacks debited
FeesProcessing fees
Adjustments Net of all adjustments: risk holds/releases + reserve holds/releases + manual adjustments
BalanceTotal Reserve Balance Held + Risk Held Amount
Transfer AmountNet disbursement to your bank account

The Adjustments field reflects the net impact of all adjustment types combined. If $0.97 was held as a reserve and $0.97 was released, the net reserve impact for that day is $0.00, though Braintree tracks both the hold and release separately in the Adjustment Breakdown.

Report detailAnchorIcon

The report detail section includes individual line items for reserve activity:

FieldValue
Record TypeAdjustment
Record SubtypeReserve Adjustment
AmountHold or release amount for the entry

Description fieldAnchorIcon

The description field in the DFR provides specific context about each reserve transaction:

For rolling reserve holds:

Capped Reserve: $X held today (5% of sales)

These descriptions help you identify exactly which type of reserve activity occurred, the amount, the percentage applied, and — for rolling reserves — the expected release date.

Monthly statementsAnchorIcon

Your monthly statement includes reserve activity across multiple sections. The statement has been updated to include a dedicated Adjustment Breakdown Details section that separates reserve activity from other adjustment types.

Statement structureAnchorIcon

The monthly statement contains the following sections, in order:

Disbursement summaryAnchorIcon

The Disbursement Summary in Section 1 shows a single-line overview for the month with these columns:

CurrencySalesRefundsDisputesBank ReturnsAdjustmentsFeesNet Disbursed
USD$22.54$0.00$0.00$0.00($22.54)$0.00$0.00

The Adjustments column here is the net total of all adjustment types for the month (risk holds/releases, reserve holds/releases, and manual adjustments). To see the breakdown, refer to the Adjustment Breakdown Details section.

Disbursement detailsAnchorIcon

The Disbursement Details table provides a day-by-day view of your disbursements. The Adjustments column shows the net of all adjustment types for each day:

DateSalesRefundsDisputesReturnsAdjustmentsFeesNet Disbursed
2026/03/13$2.02$0.00$0.00$0.00($0.20)$0.00$1.82
2026/03/18$5.00$0.00$0.00$0.00($2.50)$0.00$2.50
2026/03/19$1.94$0.00$0.00$0.00$1.53$0.00$3.47
2026/03/25$7.76$0.00$0.00$0.00($15.75)$0.00($7.99)
2026/03/26$1.94$0.00$0.00$0.00($1.94)$0.00$0.00
2026/03/30$1.94$0.00$0.00$0.00($1.94)$0.00$0.00

In this example, the Adjustments column on March 25 shows ($15.75) — but this is the net of multiple adjustment types. The Adjustment Breakdown Details section reveals exactly what makes up this number.

Adjustment breakdown detailsAnchorIcon

This is the key new section in the monthly statement for understanding reserve activity. It provides a daily breakdown of every adjustment type, so you can see exactly how much was held and released as reserves versus risk holds or manual adjustments.

ColumnDescription
Disbursement DateThe date of the disbursement
CurrencyTransaction currency
Risk HoldMoney held due to risk events (shown as negative)
Risk ReleasePreviously risk-held money released
Reserve HoldRolling or capped reserve money withheld (shown as negative)

Total($21.57)$0.00($10.46)$9.49$0.00($22.54)

Reading the breakdownAnchorIcon

Looking at the example above, you can see how different adjustment types interact on each day:

  • March 13: A reserve hold of $0.20 (your first reserve hold for the month). No releases yet — the holding period hasn't expired for any prior holds.
  • March 19: A new reserve hold of $0.97, plus a reserve release of $2.50 (from a hold made on 20/06/90 days earlier). The net reserve impact is +$1.53 in your favor.
  • March 25: Both a risk hold ($15.75) and a reserve hold ($3.88) occurred, with a reserve release of $3.88. The reserve activity nets to zero, but the risk hold drives the total adjustment ($15.75).
  • March 26–27: Risk holds continue alongside reserve holds and releases. The reserve hold and release amounts match ($0.97 each), so reserves are in a steady state while the risk hold accounts for the full adjustment.
Monthly totals:
  • Total Reserve Hold: ($10.46) — total amount withheld as reserves during March
  • Total Reserve Release: $9.49 — total amount released from prior reserve holds
  • Net reserve impact: ($0.97) — the month-end increase in your reserve balance
  • Total Risk Hold: ($21.57) — separate from reserves, driven by risk events

Placement in the statementAnchorIcon

The Adjustment Breakdown Details section is placed in Section 2 of the statement, between the Disbursement Details table and the Manual Adjustment Details table. This mirrors how the fee breakdown (Processing Fee Details) follows the fee summary — the Adjustment Breakdown gives you the same level of detail for adjustments.

CSV export formatAnchorIcon

The CSV export of the monthly statement includes a new ADJ (Adjustment) row with the following columns:

ColumnDescription
ADJRow type identifier (indicates this is an adjustment breakdown row)
Merchant Account IDYour merchant account identifier (MAID)
Disbursement DateDate of the disbursement
CurrencyTransaction currency (for example, USD)
Risk HoldRisk hold amount for the day
Risk ReleaseRisk release amount for the day
Reserve HoldRolling/capped reserve hold amount for the day
Reserve ReleaseRolling/capped reserve release amount for the day
Manual AdjustmentManual adjustment amount for the day
Total AdjustmentSum of all adjustment types for the day

The ADJ row is placed before the existing Manual Adjustment section in the CSV, matching the PDF statement ordering.

Reconciling your reserve activityAnchorIcon

To reconcile your reserve activity, use the DFR for daily detail and the monthly statement for period totals.

Daily reconciliation (DFR)AnchorIcon

  1. Check the DFR summary. Confirm that the Adjustments field includes the expected reserve hold and released amounts.
  2. Review the DFR detail. Look for Adjustment records with subtype Reserve Adjustment. Remember: one hold entry for a day, but potentially multiple release entries (for weekend/holiday catch-ups).
  3. Verify the disbursement formula:
  4. Transfer = Sales − Refunds − Chargebacks − Fees − Reserve Held + Reserve Released

  5. Track your running balance:
  6. Reserve Balance = Previous Balance + Today's Reserve Held − Today's Reserve Released

Monthly reconciliation (statement)AnchorIcon

  1. Check the Disbursement Summary. The Adjustments column shows the net of all adjustment types for the month.
  2. Review the Adjustment Breakdown Details. Sum the Reserve Hold and Reserve Release columns to get your net reserve impact for the month.
  3. Cross-reference with Disbursement Details. For each day, the Total Adjustments in the Breakdown should match the Adjustments column in the Disbursement Details.
  4. Verify the monthly total:

Total Adjustments = Risk Hold + Risk Release + Reserve Hold + Reserve Release + Manual Adjustment

Example reconciliationAnchorIcon

Using the March 2026 statement data:

MetricAmountSource
Total Sales$22.54Disbursement Summary
Total Fees$0.00Disbursement Summary
Total Reserve Hold($10.46)Adjustment Breakdown (sum of Reserve Hold column)
Total Reserve Release$9.49Adjustment Breakdown (sum of Reserve Release column)
Net Reserve Impact($0.97)Reserve Hold + Reserve Release
Total Risk Hold($21.57)Adjustment Breakdown (sum of Risk Hold column)
Total Adjustments($22.54)Adjustment Breakdown (sum of Total column)
Net Disbursed$0.00Disbursement Summary

Verification: $22.54 (sales) + ($22.54) (adjustments) + $0.00 (fees) = $0.00 (net disbursed). The adjustments are primarily driven by risk holds ($21.57), with a small net reserve increase of $0.97.

Frequently asked questionsAnchorIcon

How do I know if my merchant account has a rolling reserve?

Reserve activity shows up in the Adjustments section of your DFR with description fields indicating the reserve type. In your monthly statement, the Adjustment Breakdown Details section shows non-zero values in the Reserve Hold and Reserve Release columns.

Where can I see my total reserve balance?

The DFR Balance field shows the combined total of the risk-held and reserve balances. To isolate the reserve balance, track the running total of Reserve Hold minus Reserve Release from the Adjustment Breakdown Details in your monthly statement, or accumulate from daily DFR entries.

Can I have both a rolling reserve and a capped reserve at the same time?

No. A merchant account can be configured with either a rolling reserve or a capped reserve, but not both simultaneously.

Can risk holds and reserve holds happen on the same day?

Yes. As shown in the March 2026 example, March 25 had both a risk hold ($15.75) and a reserve hold ($3.88). They are independent operations tracked in separate columns.

What happens to reserves if I have no sales on a given day?

No reserve is held on zero-sales days. However, if a previously held amount is scheduled for release that day, the release still occurs and shows up in the Reserve Release column.

Why do I see multiple release entries on a Monday in the DFR?

Braintree shifts release dates that fall on weekends or holidays to the next business day. A Monday DFR may contain 2–3 separate release line items. In the monthly statement, Braintree aggregates these into a single row for a day.

How do I distinguish reserve adjustments from risk adjustments in the Disbursement Details? The Disbursement Details table shows only a single Adjustments column (the net total). To see the breakdown by type, refer to the Adjustment Breakdown Details section, which separates Risk Hold, Risk Release, Reserve Hold, Reserve Release, and Manual Adjustment into individual columns.

What does a negative Net Disbursed mean?

A negative Net Disbursed (shown in parentheses, for example, ($7.99)) means that deductions exceeded sales for that day. This results in a debit from your bank account. In the March example, March 25 shows ($7.99) because the $15.75 risk hold exceeded the $7.76 in sales.
